Area of academic expertise - outline
My background is in Dietetics and Nutrition and my current teaching remit encompasses many areas of health, from anatomy and physiology for nurses and midwives to occupational health and well being. I also teach into two forensic modules using biological methods of analysis and crime scence detection techniques. I have participated in several Sports based modules, on anatomy, sports nutrition and sports coaching. I provide writing and research support to students through a module developing their own biological case studies and supervise Honours and Masters Bioscience and Biotechnology students.
Current research activities
I am currently in the final stages of my doctorate , on track for completion in summer 2019, entitled "An Investigation into Probiotic Supplements,The Immune System and Diet of Female Footballers", which involved recruiting professional footballers into a 30 day probiotics trial and analysis of their diet in relation to immune function. This has provided a 'typical' profile of a female footballer, which can assist with developing robust and bespoke guidelines for female footballers and athletes.
Other areas of expertise available for knowledge exchange
I have been programme leader for a one year undergraduate certificate programme, now discontinued, that led me into more work nurturing new entrants to our degree programmes, and to that end developed summer school and various induction activities.
I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since I completed my PG Cert Advanced Academic Studies (HE teaching)
I am a qualified and Registered Nutritional Therapist and regularly appear on BBC Radio Scotland and TV promoting healthy eating and participating in debates about diet and public health messages. I am also called on to deliver nutrition based lectures and am the porfessional practice committee for my professional body BANT.
