Personal profile

Overview

I am a postdoctoral research associate in the Nuclear Physics Research Centre at the University of the West of Scotland.

My area of research is experimental nuclear physics, specifically my primary area of research is the structure and properties of atomic nuclei. The nuclei which I study are very short lived, so they do not occur naturally and must be made through nuclear reactions at laboratories.  My research is primarily performed at research laboratories such as University of Jyväskylä Accelerator Laboratory, Finland; Legnaro National Laboratory, Italy; and Argonne National Laboratory, USA.

Area of academic expertise - outline

My area of expertise is gamma-ray spectroscopy to study the structure and properties of atomic nuclei. Exotic and short lived nuclei are produced using nuclear reactions then the gamma-ray emitted from the nuclei of interest as they de-excite and detected typically using high-purity germanium (HPGe).  Large numbers of these HPGe detectors are arranged into arrays, such as JUROGAM 3, Gammasphere, AGATA, and GRETINA(GRETA). These arrays are often coupled to ancillary detectors, such as recoil seperators or charged particle detectors, to select reaction channels of interest. The area of the nuclear chart which I study is the light-actinide region, where octupole deformation occurs.

Current research activities

My current research activities involves the study of octupole deformation in the light-actinide region of the nuclear chart. Recently I have led two experiments performed at the University of Jyväskylä Accelerator Laboratory. The first experiment invovled the study of the alpha decay of 223U and 225,227Np using the RITU gas-filled spectrometer. The second experiment was performed to identify excited states in 223Pa using JUROGAM-3 gamma-ray spectrometer and RITU.
