Overview

I have a wealth of experience and an extensive background in General Nursing, Midwifery, Health Visiting  Sexual Health and Higher Education. In recognition of my contribution to my profession and the field of Adolescent Health I have received personal awards from the Royal College of Nursing, the Queens Nursing Institute (Scotland) and the Hospital Savings Association.My interest and desire to further develop my knowledge and understanding of adolescents led to my first  visit to the Centre for Adolescent Health in Melbourne,Australia in 2002 which  funded by a study tour grant from General Nursing Council for Scotland. I returned in 2015 as part of a team of health professionals that included a Professor of Maternal,Child & Family Health, a Consultant Paediatrician and a Consultant Nurse for Vulnerable Children. My second visit was funded with a small research grant from the Carnegie Trust.

My first conference presentation was in 1994 and since then I have presented at many national conferences  within Scotland and  the UK.  In 2016, I presented at the 4th International global network of public health nursing conference in Denmark and also the Worldwide Nursing Conference in Singapore. I have organised an hosted conferences at the University of the West of Scotland which have focussed on Promoting Adolescent Health, 'Getting it Right for Every Child' (GIRFEC) and Understanding Rape and Sexual Abuse.

Area of academic expertise - outline

My area of expertise is located within the  field of Public Health. I have a particular interest in Adolescent Health and Well Being. The main focus of my research has been on Sex Education in Secondary schools, Child Protection Policy and Practice and more recently on Vulnerable Adolescents.I have expertise in Masters supervision and am also involved in PhD supervison as part of the supervisory team. Topics include school nursing,sexual health, child development and sex education in schools.

Current research activities

I am currently involved in a feasibility study which was comissioned by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (£29,900) as part of the Mental Health Strategy.This study has recently been completed and is in the process of being written up for dissemaination.

Interested in International/National  research collaboration in Adolescent Health and Wellbeing, Sex Education in Schools and School Nursing.
