Personal profile
Overview
Since completing my PhD on the interface between modernist theatre and philosophy (University of Edinburgh), my research has been particularly preoccupied with questions of the political in performance, explored through the lenses of philosophy, performance theory and practice, that expand across the human and beyond the human.
I'm an editor of the international, interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed Performance Philosophy journal (https://www.performancephilosophy.org/journal/about), and I’m a founding member of the Performance Philosophy Network https://www.performancephilosophy.org. I also co-convened, at the Theatre and Perormance Research Association (TaPRA), the Theatre, Performance and Philosophy Group for several years (2010-16).
My two co-edited collections Performing Antagonism: Theatre, Performance and Radical Democracy (Palgrave 2017) and Beyond Failure: New Essays on the Cultural History of Failure in theatre and Performance (Routledge 2018) rehabilitate perceived notions of the political from the point of radical vulnerability, failure, and resilience. And, currently, I'm co-editing two journal themed editions: Performing Powerlessness (Performance Philosophy Journal, April 2022) and On Biopolitics (Performance Research, Summer 2022).
My practice is interdisciplinary, bringing together film, media and performance, and has a particular interest in projects that promote civic engagement. Some of my latest practice takes place in museum and gallery spaces by developing public performances from their archives and artefacts. I've developed a series of public performances at the Petrie Museum (UCL) funded by the Loterry Heritage fund, and various performance projects from a range of narratives at the LIFT archives, the Women Art Collections and the Hackney Empire archives funded by the UEL Archives.
Before joining the University of the West Scotland in 2020, I taught at the Wimbledon Arts College (University of the Arts London) (2018-20) and the University of East London (2010-18). At the University of East London, I held programme leadership roles at the undergraduate and postgraduate drama programmes, and was a co-director of the research Centre for the Performing Arts Development. (2013-17).
