Area of academic expertise - outline

Initially Dorothy worked in Nursery and Primary Early-Years’ classes in schools around Glasgow and Renfrewshire. She also spent some time with Support Services, working with young people with additional support needs. For 10 years she was a manager in Further Education; during this time she was an Associate Assessor with HMIe.

Dorothy is the Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Childhood Studies and BA ( Hons) Childhood Practice. She coordinates the delivery of programmes in Ayr, Dumfries and Hamilton and with collaborative partners in New College Lanarkshire and West College Scotland and Nanyang Institute, Singapore.

Currently she serves as Chair of the Programme Board, on the University Education Advisory Committee, the School Education Board, International and Education Forums.
Externally Dorothy is a member of the Childhood Practice Providers Group and is an External Examiner for Glasgow University ( Dumfries).

Dorothy delivers a range of lectures and workshops focused on the Early Years through inputs in areas such as equality and inclusion, management, leadership, children’s learning and development, transition. She  contributes to the Early Years’ inputs as part of the PGDP and BA( Hons) Education programmes.. Dorothy is particularly interested in inclusion.

Area of Research Expertise Dorothy has presented a number of posters and presentations on the research areas of employability and transition. Most of her work has focussed on Professional Development and Childhood Practice.

 Current Research Activities I am currently researching identity and professional development and literacy .

 Desired Research Direction To continue this work and develop research into family learning 

Target Collaborative Companies The focus of the work is in the public sector

Target Collaborative Organisations These will be Local Authorities close to the campuses in Lanarkshire, Ayrshire, Dumfries and Galloway and the central belt.
