Personal profile

I am a chronic disease epidemiologist and have extensive experience in cancer epidemiology, clinical research and public health. I am keen on applying these research experiences in the teaching of epidemiology, statistical methods and research methods. Aside from teaching, I also collaborate with organisations and research groups for projects on a wide range of health-related topics, with the aim of providing empirical evidence to further enhance preventive strategies, clinical care and health outcomes. My PhD work was on the extent to which comorbidities (e.g., diabetes, COPD, heart failure, myocardial infarction) influence treatment decisions and prognosis of patients with colorectal cancer, using a large cohort study.

Area of academic expertise - outline

I have expertise in the development and application of novel epidemiological and statistical methods, including meta-analysis, in investigating major risk, treatment-related and prognostic factors for chronic diseases. I also have extensive experience in the development and validation of risk scoring algorithms (e.g., nomograms) for predicting health outcomes, including incidence and prognosis of disease conditions.

Current teaching activities and interests

  • Public and population health
  • Epidemiology
  • Biostatistics
  • Research methods
  • Systematic review and meta-analysis

Current research activities

  • Evaluation of risk and prognostic factors for early-onset chronic diseases, including colorectal cancer, type II diabetes, and myocardial infarction.
  • Assessment of risk factors for advanced stage cancer diagnosis.
  • The roles of comorbidities (specific types and overall) in the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of patients with cancer.

Desired research direction

  • Development and validation of risk scoring algorithms for predicting incidence and outcomes of early- and late-onset chronic diseases.
  • Evaluation of risk, treatment-related and prognostic factors and burden of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes in Africa.
  • Assessment of agreement of information on the commonly studied risk factors and outcomes in epidemiological studies from different data sources.
  • Evaluation of impacts of clinical and public health interventions on health outcomes (e.g., incidence/prevalence and prognosis of disease conditions, healthcare cost, length of hospital stay, quality of life).
