Area of academic expertise - outline
I am a registered nurse with a background in critical care nursing. My particular area of interests are recognition of the deteriorating patient and the nursing interventions used to support and treat these patients. I also have experience of practice learning, particularly in the Care Home setting. My recent MSc dissertation looked at student nurses experiences of receiving formative feedback in the clinical practice setting.
Current research activities
I am currently undertaking an evaluative study into the use of Social Media as a learning resource. Myself and a colleague have incorporated a Facebook group into one of the Year 1 modules and are surveying students as to their thoughts and feelings on using this to help build effective relationhships, share resources and contribute to continuing professional development.
I am also part of a project team looking into the use of Emotional Touchpoints as a tool for enhancing the student experience.
Desired research direction
I am interested in exploring Non-technical skills and studnet nurses. We have input a scenario based session int the Year 3 skills module asking students to examine their own non-technical skills. Preliminary evaluation provided positive feedback. I hope to develop the session and evaluation further adn seek ethical approval for this.
Other areas of expertise available for knowledge exchange
I have an interest in engaging student nurses with older adult care areas, particularly the care home setting. I would be interested in exploring students perceptions of these areas and the nursing/healthcare delivered within these settings.
