Personal profile
Overview
I am a Senior Lecturer in the Division of Management, Organisations and People in the School of Business and Creative Industries.
I am a Senior Fellow of Advance HE (SFHEA) and a CABS Chartered Business and Management Educator (CMBE). I am also a member of the British Academy of Management.
I have a PhD in Management from Heriot-Watt University entitled 'Volunteering and Employability: the roles and experiences of volunteer-involving organisations and employers in Scotland'.
Prior to my academic career, I worked as a researcher in both the public and third sectors in Scotland. I undertook both quantitative and qualitative research in areas relating to public policy on skills and volunteering.
Area of academic expertise - outline
My academic expertise centres around employability, volunteering, social value and skills development. I am also engaged in the Scholarship of Learning and Teaching.
I am Principal Investigator of a managment Knowledge Transfer Partnership (mKTP) with Routes To Work where we are applying Social Value methodologies to evaluating Employability interventions with a view to finding better ways to evidence the intangible benefits.
I am a Level 1 Associate Practitioner of Social Value and SROI.
Current research activities
My current research activities focus on two key areas - social value and learning and teaching.
My Social Value research is related to the mKTP with Routes to Work and involves reflecting on the application of Social Value methodologies to employability interventions with a view to improving how we understand 'what works' in the employability journey.
My learning and teaching research focuses on 1) staff development for Programme Leaders and what we have learned from running a focused programme of CPD, and 2) what we have learned from undertaking a pilot of group supervision on our London MBA.
Current teaching activities and interests
My current teaching focuses on delivering core Research Methods teaching to students on the MSc International Management and the MSc Human Resource Management. I supervise MBA and Masters dissertations.
I have brought my professional expertise into my teaching, leading Undergraduate modules on Skills and Work Based Learning. In addition, I have been involved in delivering a range of Business Management focused modules across SCQF Levels 7-11.
I have taught across a number of our Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes including BA (Hons) Business, BA (Hons) Business Management (Graduate Apprenticeship), MSc International Management and MSc Human Resource Management.
I am also a Doctoral Supervisor to three students, focusing on Early Career Lecturer development, Enterprise Education and Mentoring.
Desired research direction
My desired research direction is to continue to develop my knowledge of Social Value and how it can be applied to measuring the impact of public policy interventions including Employability interventions.
