Personal profile

Area of academic expertise - outline

My name is Antonio Dello Iacono, and I am a Reader in Strength and Conditoning at the Division of Sport, Exercise, and Health in the School of Health and Life Sciences. I have 20 years combined experience of working as a practitioner in elite sport with university teaching and research positions. My research activity spans across the areas of elite performance conditioning, training load monitoring, performance analysis and implementation of technology in sport. I am currently leading the Sports Performance Interest Group at the University of the West of Scotland, by coordinating applied research projects with industry collaborative partners.

Current teaching activities and interests

I coordinate and teach modules in the fields of Strength & Conditioning, Research Methods and Applied Biomechanics.

Desired research direction

My primary research goal is to revisit the way exercise is prescribed – from a rigid and pre-determined one-size-fits-all approach to one that promotes exercise prescription tailored to an individual’s abilities, preferences, responses to training, and non-training-related stressors. This change can improve elite sports performance outcomes, adherence to exercise, and health by deterring the onset of diseases and maladaptive symptoms such as overtraining and injury, thus reducing healthcare spending.

I plan to achieve this goal by developing personalized exercise prescription models and investigating the effectiveness of 1) autoregulation methods, 2) leveraging autoregulation in resistance training, and 3) integrating my own research into interdisciplinary paths.
