Moving image works include an international  feature documentary 'Orwell: Against the Tide' (2003) which I developed, wrote and co-produced, featuring interviews  conducted with Noam Chomsky and Richard Rorty, 'Back to Life: Restoring Paisley's Grand Fountain' (2014)a survey of the award winning conservation project and its interface with the community it belongs to featuring songs written for the project;'Finding the Seam: Rab Wilson's Poetic Journey' (2011) a feature documentary exploring award winning poet Rab Wilson's exploration of the coal industry in the west of Scotland where he himself once worked, featuring poems specially written for the project; 'Ozu's Tomb - A Journey' (2015) documenting a performative pilgrimage to the tomb of Japanese filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu with colleagues  Professor Katarzyna Kosmala and Dr. Gill Jamieson, featuring haiku; 'Down the Great Drain' - a documentary focusing on  Paisley's forgotten medieval past and the excavation and investigation of the great drain of Paisley Abbey, once a major european centre of religion, trade and learning.

Written publications include work on Community Media, Cultural Heritage and Screen Adaptation.

 

Current research activities

 A Car for Women - research project on Dorothée Pullinger and the Galloway car with Professor Katherine Kirk and Professor Katarzyna Kosmala et al.  Producing practice-based research film output.

Beyond Image, Beyond Language -  with Professor Katarzyna Kosmala -  academic and research exchange with Tokyo Metropolitan Univeristy's IDEEALab.

 

Overview

I have a background in practice-based research and documentary filmaking but also wide ranging interdisciplinary  research interests at the intersections of culture, archaeology and industrial heritage, literature and creative media practice.

Desired research direction

I am interested in exploring the interface between artist moving-image and documentary practice.  In particular, I aim to investigate the intersections between science and art.
