Personal profile

Area of academic expertise - outline

Alison Clifford is an artist and researcher investigating the intersection between art and technology.  Her artworks are concerned with defining notions of the interstitial through processes of translation and interpretation between media, considering the new creative possibilities that result from what is lost or gained through such interpretation. Research outputs include net-art, experimental film, interactive works and audiovisual installations. She has exhibited widely in various international new-media and electronic art festivals and exhibitions, and has received several awards and commissions. These include a BAFTA nomination for interactive media, a commission from SFMOMA, and recent inclusion in the second edition of the Electronic Literature Collection (USA).
Alison has a PhD from Glasgow School of Art, (title: ‘Articulating the Interstitial: Interpretive Responses in Digital Art Practice’); a Master in Digital Art from the Audiovisual Institute, University of Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona), and an MA (Hons) in English Literature from the University of Edinburgh.

Current research activities

Her current practice-based research continues her interdisciplinary collaboration with composer and sound artist Graeme Truslove. Through collaboration, they investigate how natural systems can be used to propagate relationships between audio and visual elements in immersive audiovisual art practice.

Desired research direction

To continue investigating how natural systems can inform audiovisual aesthetics as experienced through immersive audiovisual artworks. As a result of this, she is particularly keen to collaborate with researchers from the natural sciences.

Other areas of expertise available for knowledge exchange

Visual/audiovisual installations and interactive artworks for museums, art galleries and public spaces.
