Graduate Apprenticeships need link tutors – but who's looking after them?

This research stemmed from insights of our recent study conducted in collaboration with the University of Glasgow investigating stakeholder impact on discretionary learning within Graduate Apprenticeship programmes.
Our findings demonstrate that discretionary learning represents a critical but underdeveloped dimension of Graduate Apprenticeship effectiveness. When properly supported through collaborative stakeholder relationships, discretionary learning creates a virtuous cycle that benefits apprentices through enhanced skill development, employers through improved organisational capabilities, and the broader economy through workforce transformation.
However, realising this potential requires deliberate attention to the support ecosystems surrounding apprentices and purposeful creation of workplace environments that encourage autonomous, creative practice alongside operational excellence.
