Description
This presentation describes the evolution of a standalone, optional English forAcademic Purposes (EAP) module into an integrated and compulsory element
of a range of programmes across schools at UWS. It starts by outlining the
original EAP module in terms of structure, content, and assessment, as well as
the impact it has on student output. It then moves on to detailing the different
versions of the EAP module which have come into existence through integration in a range of modules and programmes, including Educational Studies,
Public Administration, and, subsequent to these successful implementations,
the Nursing programmes.
The presentation provides information on the collaborative process through
which the content, structure, and assessment has been tailored to best support students on each of these programmes. It will also highlight how this
expansion of EAP content delivery has supported internationalisation of the
university by offering academic support to a greater number of international
students for whom English is not a first language, and who may face challenges
producing work that meets both the linguistic and academic requirements of
the institution and the specific programmes.
The presentation concludes with guidance on how this collaborative broadening of EAP support can be replicated at other institutions looking to support
international students in this tailored way.
