Description
As part of participating in the Scottish Engineering Award, I delivered a STEM presentation to a group of Primary 4 (P4) and Primary 2 (P2) pupils at Dalmarnock Primary School. The interactive presentation focused on Civil Engineering and how it is related to the daily activities of our lives. Pupils were presented with an insight into the transport infrastructure, how they join us and how we depend on them in our daily activities. The presentation focused on inspiring the pupils and stimulate their 'critical' thinking skills to identify some of the problems facing our transport infrastructure and how they contribute to disrupting our journeys (e.g. storms, snow and sinkholes) in addition to identifying the cause(s) of such problems and attempt to come up with possible solutions. These latter activities formed part of a brainstorming session after the presentation, where pupils worked together in small groups (3 to 4 in each) and produced mindmaps of engineering problems and suggestions for their solutions. I provided assistance on this occasion by supporting pupils and providing further explanation. The pupils' ideas were compiled to form part of a submission to the Scottish Engineering Leadership Award.Period | 24 Jan 2020 |
