Today’s digital world has paved the way for a smart world where even energy management needs to be “smart”. The transition from traditional energy systems to smart energy systems with more cost-efficiency, sustainability and security can be made possible only by rethinking the way energy is being utilized and managed. Various infrastructures, business models and patterns need to be integrated to enable this change. Smart solutions are required for the acquisition, management, utilization and analysis of data in the energy systems. Artificial Intelligence, often regarded as the future of all complex decision making strategies, can play a major role in building energy efficient smart systems. Designing energy efficient systems, however, is not an easy task due to the various challenges it put forwards at various levels including the technical, economical and institutional levels. Smart energy systems can offer all the advantages only if necessary scalable solutions are incorporated into the system. This requires extensive research in the fields of energy storage and management capabilities, design, tariff plans, frameworks, global and national policies and standards, end-user engagement and a lot more. In light of rapid developments in the field of artificial intelligence, it proves to be efficient when designing solutions for smart energy systems.
