De-regulating the environment: our climate emergency dilemma

    It is clear, the stability of our environmental envelope is compromised. Dramatic changes seen from the headlines of global temperature rise and the increasing acidity of our oceans makes climate action necessary and urgent. Substantial increase in the frequency of extreme weather events impacts on all aspects of society, the long-term projections push harder for additional adaptation and mitigation measures. With the drive to “Net Zero” an attempt to position economies to work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, targets have been more recently challenged or revised typically based on cost or resources. Global issues of energy security, supply chain reliability and competitiveness have driven many jurisdictions to consider streamlining or simplifying regulation to support economic growth. What are the implications for our future sustainability? Should we strengthen rather than weaken regulation? Does it matter?
